The low passes of Black Sail and Beck Head separate Kirk Fell from it's two higher neighbours, which gives it a high relative height and makes it a Marilyn and the thirteenth highest fell in the Lake District.

This fell is usually ascended from either the Black Sail or Beck Head passes, however, Kirk Fell can also be climbed as part of the Mosedale Horseshoe, a walk on the fells surrounding Mosedale, which is a side valley of Wasdale.

From the summit of Kirk Fell, which is marked by a cairn, Great Gable, Gable Crag and the Napes can be seen. The Scafells as well as the High Stile and Grasmoor ranges are also clearly visible with distant glimpses of the Skiddaw and Helvellyn ranges.
