Holker Hall
Holker Hall, which is only a short distance from Grange over Sands and Morecambe Bay, is the home of Lord and Lady Cavendish who welcome visitors of all ages to their beautiful stately home. This estate has never been sold throughout it's 400 year history, it has been passed, by inheritance, through the family line. The house, which is almost all Victorian, can be viewed without the restriction of barriers and ropes. This wonderful family home has fine displays of antique furniture and art. You can even view the bedroom where Queen Mary stayed in 1937.
Thomas Mawson, the internationally reputed landscape gardener who was based in Windermere, took a great interest in the gardens of Holker Hall as it contained many rare conifers, rhododendrons and other peat loving plants. Mawson set low terraces, a rose garden and a balustraded boundary wall to contrast with the landscape manner of the rolling parkland in 1910. However, the sunken garden now replaces Thomas Mawson's rose garden.
Holker Hall Car Museum
The Lakeland Motor Museum, which is housed within the grounds of Holker Hall, has a private collection of classic and vintage cars, scooters, tractors and automobilia of all kinds. It even has Campbell's Bluebird, although it is a replica which was made for a BBC television play.
Holker Hall has a gift shop, exhibitions, coach house cafe, adventure playground and a picnic area. This delightful stately home has a lot to offer it's visitors of all ages. It would be advisable to check the Holker Hall website for upcoming events and activities.
