Hill Top
Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top, a farm in Near Sawrey, in 1905. This was the first farm she bought in the Lake District. It was from this small 17th century farmhouse that she wrote many of her Peter Rabbit tales.
Beatrix Potter left the house to the National Trust. This farmhouse contains many of Miss Potter's personal effects, china and furniture, as well as original illustrations from the books that made her famous. It remains in the same state as when she lived here and is open to the public.
Hill Top farmhouse has become extremely popular since it was recreated for the film Miss Potter. However, as Hill Top farmhouse is so small it often gets crowded and therefore there is a timed entry system in operation - this is to avoid overcrowding and to protect the fragile interior.
