Hesket Newmarket

Hesket Newmarket, lies in the northern edge of the Lakeland Fells, is a quaint and unspoilt village. It's name apparently originates from the Old Norse eski - a place overgrown with ash trees - and the Olde English heafod - head or hill - the newmarket was later added on.

This is a picturesque village built around a long green, which is approximately five acres.

When the Hesket Newmarket Brewery owners wanted to retire, and the business looked in jeopardy, fifty eight villagers and supporters set up a co-operative. They first bought the brewery and later purchased the pub itself. Visitors from Scotland, England, South Africa and even North America, who had visited the pub and had fallen under it's spell also joined the co-operative, each donating £1,500. This purchase was also helped by grant funding from Cumbria County Council Rural Regeneration Fund and the Lake District National Park Sustainable Development Fund. The Old Crown is thought to be the first co-operatively owned pub in Britain.
