Great Langdale

Great Langdale, which is a valley in the Lake District, covers an area of approximately 12,170 acres. The valley is normally just called Langdale, however, the title Great is what separates it from it's neighbouring valley of Little Langdale. This valley, which covers an area from Ambleside through Clappersgate, Skelwith Bridge, Elterwater, Chapel Stile to the National Trust owned Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, and the glaciated valley of Mickelden, is mostly cared for by the National Trust who have around ten farms here.

Hikers, climbers, fell runners and other outdoor enthusiasts are attracted to this valley by the many fells that surround the head of the valley. Scafell Pike, which is England's highest mountain, can also be climbed from the Langdale Valley. Langdale Pikes, which is one of the best known features of Great Langdale, is a group of peaks on the northern side of the dale. There is a campsite, which is open all year, situated at the head of the scenic Great Langdale Valley and guarded by the dominating Langdale Pikes. This campsite, which is a walker's and climber's dream, is cared for by the National Trust.
