Great Gable

Great Gable, which is situated at the head of the Wasdale valley and with an elevation of 2949 feet is significantly lower in height than the Scafells, yet it remains one of the most popular mountains in England. It is so popular that the Lake District National Park has even used it's distinctive outline as their logo. The summit of Great Gable, which is strewn with boulders, has some of the most beautiful panoramic views of any peak in the area.

The Fell and Rock Climbing Club (FRCC) dedicated a war memorial in 1924, near the summit of Great Gable above Wasdale Head in the Lake District, to commemorate the names of the members who had fallen during the Great War of 1914 - 1918. This was a bronze tablet inscribed with the relevant names of their fallen comrades. This dedication, by poet, author, climber and walker Geoffrey Winthrop Young, was in front of a crowd of 500 walkers and climbers. Each year, on Remembrance Sunday, a commemorative service takes place at the summit of Great Gable, now commemorating not just the fallen members of the FRCC, but the fallen of both World Wars and other wars and conflicts. This service usually attracts several hundred climbers and walkers each year.
