Florence Mine

Florence Mine, which is the last deep Iron Ore mine in Western Europe, can be found just south of Egremont in Cumbria. Iron Ore mining, which has been in this area for a long time, became more serious and industrialised in 1830. Many mines opened during this time, but eventually they all closed leaving Florence Mine the only working mine.

The Red Iron Ore has become the distinctive colour of the mine, the people who work there and it's building. The mine, which only has a few miners still working, produces ore and haematite for the annealing industry, products for the cosmetic industry and high quality minerals. Unfortunately, the Mine Heritage Centre at Florence Mine has been reluctantly closed by the West Cumbria Mines Research Group as the site is no longer suitable for the venture.
