Eskdale Mill

Eskdale Mill, which is situated in the small hamlet of Boot in the Eskdale Valley in Cumbria, is one of the oldest water powered corn mills in England as well as the last remaining working mill in the Lake District. The village of Boot is approximately half a mile from Dalegarth Station which is at the end of The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

This mill, which is reached by crossing the 17th century packhorse bridge over the Whillan Beck which flows down from the side of Scafell, follows the Roman design described by Vitruvius in 79BC and which was found in mills of that period operating along Hadrians Wall.

The Eskdale Mill and Heritage Trust purchased this mill from the county council in 2006 to save it from being sold on the open market. This, hopefully, will secure it's operation as a piece of working history. Before visiting this mill, please check their website for opening times.
