Crosthwaite Church

Crosthwaite Church, which is on the northern outskirts of Keswick in the Lakes, is dedicated to St Kentigern. This is one of several churches in the area dedicated to the early Christian missionary, who is also known by his Scottish name of St Mungo.

There are nine small consecration crosses inside and twelve outside the church, which mark the points at which the bishop anointed the walls after a restoration of the church in Tudor times. Not only does this church have a number of ancient relics and captivating stained glass, but inside there is a white marble figure of Robert Southey, who was Poet Laureate and a Keswick resident. The inscription is by his friend William Wordsworth.

The ashes of Mrs Lynn Linton, novelist daughter of a former vicar and apparently the first women newspaper writer to draw a fixed salary, is also at this church. The well known Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, who was one of the founders of the National Trust and who also was vicar for thirty four years, is buried here in the graveyard together with his wife Edith. The church's website provides more information about the church's history.
