Cockermouth Norman Castle

Cockermouth Castle, which is located in the town of Cockermouth and approximately eight miles east of Workington, is mainly a 13th century structure which was rebuilt in 1360 upon the site of a Norman castle dating from 1134. This castle played a significant role in the Wars of the Roses and the Civil Wars of the 1640's. However, it was after this that Parliament ordered the dismantling of it and much of it still remains in ruins. Fortunately, it is now a Grade 1 listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The Wyndham rooms, which are built along the north wall of the outer bailey, is now home to the Dowager Lady Egremont. This castle is not open to the public, however, it is usually open on certain days during the Cockermouth Festival which is held during July of each year.
