Chapel Stile
Chapel Stile, which is on the banks of the River Brathay, is a small village located at the foot of Great Langdale in the Lake District, Cumbria. This area, which is well known for it's distinctive green slate, has 19th century slate houses which were built to house the quarrymen. However, around the same time a gunpowder works was also established to supply the slate quarry mines.

Holy Trinity Church, which is located at the foot of Silver How, looks over the village of Chapel Stile. This church, which was built around 1857, was designed by Cory and Ferguson of Carlisle. However, before this church was built, services took place at Grasmere. In this church there are a number of interesting stained glass windows which are worthy of a viewing. Interestingly, the Reverend Owen Lloyd, who was the nephew of William Wordsworth's brother Charles, is buried in the churchyard and his gravestone is inscribed with a poem written by William Wordsworth in his memory.
This picturesque village, which has a wide variety of accommodation on offer together with restaurants and pubs, has many walking routes of various gradients available. Chapel Stile is also the perfect location to start your climb up the Langdale Pikes.
