Lakes Waters and Tarns of the Lake District

Although there are only sixteen lakes in the Lake District, there are innumerable amounts of tarns, some of which are not even named. The term "tarn" means small mountain lake. The tarns in Cumbria range from very small to large enough to pass for a lake. Interestingly, Tarn Hows, which is a popular tourist attraction, was actually three smaller tarns which were joined to create a lake.

Bassenthwaite Lake is the only area of water officially named a lake, as "mere" or "water" applies to the larger areas of water in the Lake District. However, "tarn" applies to the smaller areas of water. Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater and Derwent Water are the only lakes upon which a private powered vessel is allowed. Please note, however, that 10mph restriction has been placed on all these lakes. Ferry, steamers or launch services are also only available on these lakes.
