Cartmel
Just west of Grange over Sands, is a lovely picturesque village with a beautiful square which still has a cross and an old village pump and a nice river running through it. Even though Cartmel is just outside the National Park, it is a conservation area and has not been ruined by unsuitable developments.

The Cartmel Priory, which is what Cartmel is famous for, dates back to 1188. However, only the Priory Church and Gatehouse remain, these are now owned by the National Trust who use them to house exhibitions of paintings by Lakes artists. Cartmel also has a racecourse.
