This lake, which is only one and a quarter miles long, quarter of a mile wide, approximately seventy five feet deep and three hundred and twenty nine feet above sea level was separated by a narrow half mile strip of land from the adjacent Crummock Water when a larger lake silted up at it's centre. Buttermere means 'the lake by the dairy pastures'.

Did you know?

If you walk anticlockwise around Buttermere, along the lakeshore, you will enter a short tunnel which cuts through the rock. Apparently it was a local landowner who had it blasted through because he was unhappy at not being able to walk all round the lake.

Activities

Small boats, windsurfers and canoes can be launched on Buttermere, but you have to get permission to do so. The National Trust, who own this lake, have rowing boats for hire.
