Details
The Blackwell Arts and Crafts House, which is just one and a half miles south of Bowness on Windermere and was built in 1900, was designed by M H Baillie Scott between 1898 and 1900. This house is a wonderful example of Arts and Crafts movement architecture, as it still has most of it's original decorative interiors still intact. Baillie Scott dismissed the Victorian plan in favour of a modern open plan design, using space and light to form the large, yet comfortable and adaptable living spaces. He also designed every detail within the house using his traditional craft skills, this is evident in the stained glass, decorative plaster work, intricate carved oak panelling, metalwork and fabric designs.
This house was given a Grade 1 listing in 1998. The Lakeland Arts Trust purchased this property on 26 February 1999. The property was restored between 2000 to 2001 and opened in July 2001 to the public as a gallery providing national and international focus for high quality Arts and Crafts. The Lakeland Arts Trust also own and run The Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Museum of Lakeland Life and the Windermere Steamboat Museum.
