Allonby

Allonby, which is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a village on the north west coast of Cumbria. This village, which lies between Maryport and Silloth has a long sandy beach with wonderful views which stretch across the Solway Estuary up to the mountains of southern Scotland.

This small village, which has a long history going back to the 18th century of being a sea bathing resort, has many beautiful old buildings such as Christ Church, the Old Baths, North Lodge and the Reading Room. The Reading Room, which was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and who was also well known for designing London's Natural History Museum and Manchester's Town Hall, was built in approximately 1862 and was funded by local donations and by Joseph Pease, a Quaker Industrialist from the north east of England.

Just south of this charming little village with cobbled lanes and Georgian and Victorian influences lies Milefortlet 21. This site, which is now a designated World Heritage Site, served as part of the Roman coastal defence system in the region. Also in this area are the Crosscanonby Salt Pans.
