Aira Force
Aira Force, which is a spectacular waterfall owned and maintained by the National Trust, lies close to the A592 on the northern side of Ullswater. The Aira Beck falls approximately 70 feet down a rocky ravine before joining with Ullswater. The then newly formed National Trust acquired Aira Force and 750 acres of surrounding land in 1906 when Gowbarrow Park, which included Aira Force, came up for sale for housing plots.
The National Trust has an information vehicle on site which provides an audio trail on cassette as well as a talking postcard for those with impaired vision. There are also leaflets available which explain the story of Aira Force and Gowbarrow Park as well as describing family walks from the large car park. The cafe, at the large car park, has information panels which describes the area and it's fascinating history.
